EDITHere is a list of all the new features that FM09 will have!

The new football season will be upon us soon and with that I think we can expect Football Manager 2009 (FM09).  I know Sports Interactive have been investing quite a bit of time in Football Manager Live (click the link to read my preview) but I think we can expect some exciting new features in Football Manager 2009 all the same.

Some of the features I would like to see would include:

  • I think it should be at least possible to win red card appeals…  Currently i never win appeals but when you look at the actual Premier League it is possible to win an appeal here or there
  • International management could be improved although i’m sure sure how just yet
  • I’d like to be able to ‘shout’ (you know what I mean) instructions during the game to specific players while they are playing
  • Greater pre/post match team talks
  • Easier to sell players and get a reasonable price
  • Maybe be able to start as a youth/reserve team manager and work your way through the ranks of the club

Well there are a few of my thoughts of some new features we could maybe see in Football Manager 2009 (FM09) and I would be really interested to hear what other people would like to see also.

Oh yeah, it’s due for release on 31/10/2008, for more info check out http://www.sega.co.uk/fm09/.

…Also liking the idea of re-including agents like they had in previous editions (can’t think of which atm- its late!)
How about including factors like 3rd-party ownerships Kia Joorabchian style?
    Realistic is it not?

On the realistic wave, what about points deductions and club fines???
They may already be included but I’m yet to witness one!

Oh! and sort out stadium expansions! Whenever I had one completed it seemed to go back to the original capacity after a save or two! even with the bleeding patch!!

  2. Will says:

    YES! GOD PLEASE YES!! lol

Walcott is shite in real life, i think he is overated because i really cant see him being the next Henry, and he is not as good as Nani or Anderson

  3. Lil Ez says:

Will i think u need 2 get real. Saying Theo Walcott is overated in the game is really sad. Henry join arsenal at the age of 20-21 Theo is 19 and a very gifted footballer. Superstars don’t come overnight. Next get real with nani he an’t ronaldo and will never be. For anderson well FM has got several Stats wrong and the most blatent is his finnishing which is like 12 it should be 1. And please if u want 2 compare youngsters look no further than Cesc Fabregas who is still under rated in FM

2 answer some1 elses question about why arsenal youth is so good. It is because arsenal is one of a few teams who actully field a youth team for reserve games. and the only team 2 play kids in the League cup.

  4. Will says:

    OMG

i said he is overrated in REAL LIFE you smart guy
in real life i really think Anderson and Nani are better than Walcott

as i say, the press overate Walcott in real life and i cant see him turning into a football superstar

  5. Will says:

And Nani will never be Ronaldo…….well duh, Ronaldos the best playeer in the world and although some of Andersons attacking stats will go down, his strength defense and passing will be way higher

Come on Anderson you abosloute GOD! HE SHITS ON FABREGAS…….!!

  6. Sam says:

I’m thinking a player manager would be very cool….

  7. Big Dave says:

personally i think the manager wages should be able to be spent but maybe added to the transfer budget, i liked the thought of starting as a youth coach or reserve coach however i dont think it would work because if your at a team with a rubbish reserve team your unable to improve it as only the main manager buys players so would be able to show your full potential. i think they should improve on transfers players are always over valued like one of the best players you have to spend like 80 mil but your team is given that sort of money not even chelsea also i think that players should be able to be tempted more easily by a good contract like in real life with the lkes of robinho to city, i guarentee that would be impossible on fm2008

  8. Hotshot says:

Before this gets into a debate about who’s the next Henry i’d like to mention that a better financial breakdown for clubs would be better, yeah you get info about where your wages are going and taxes etc but then there’s a field called ‘other’ and it can run into the hundreds of thousands at the bigger clubs, and when you’re trying to cut your outgoings i’d really like to know what that ‘other’ 230k is going on per month!

New kits every couple of seasons could generate massive amounts of fundage for the clubs as all the hardcore fans go to buy the new shirt, it would be a sudden influx of cash at the start of the season, i mean when the new Arsenal shirt costs near enough £50 and their millions of fansworldwide are buying them up in pre-season, how much cash is pre-season missing?! It could be reported much like the season ticket sales, call it new shirt sales, have reached 123,456 this month generating £xxxxxxxx.

This could be controlled and could be different for various clubs, and limited like back in the 90′s when Man Utd virtually had a new kit on a weekly basis and all the fans complained at the money it was costing them. New shirt sponsers could also affect this. Doesn’t even have to be named sponsers just new shirt sponser has been announced generating xmil per annum, then you see a spike in shirt sales again.

Also renting of corporate boxes in pre-season, United Arsenal etc etc all have luxury boxes that companies pay big bucks to host their events at, this must generate truck loads for clubs, can this be included, just extra money and news report about it in pre-season?

More money = more players, just ask Mark Hughes!

  9. Hotshot says:

to further my point there’s alot of money missing in the game it seems, Man United haven’t sold tonnes of players this season but have managed to spend, i’d imagine, 30mil on Berbatov, but i bet end of the season in FM you’re gonna have to sell big players before you can buy the likes of Villa who would only be worth about 30-35mil (gonna have to pay 80 though!)

  10. Will says:

Hotshot, your a funny guy and all, but are you serious when you say UNited have spent and HAVEN’T sold tonnes of players! :L do you mean the other way round?

Yes they spent ALOT, but not a lot of players……

  11. Lil Ez says:

Yeah Hotshot FM got it right last time Man u spent alot and got a much smaller transfer budget than Arsenal.
The only problem i have with FM is that the likes of Liverpool are overated with amazing young players which no1 has ever seen play. Whilst Aston Villa are underated. That needs 2 change this time round.
And we need player and manager agents

  12. Hotshot says:

Well what i mean is in FM you start with maybe 16mil as a top club like Arsenal or Liverpool, that’s because the game is starting in July, BUT the db is set in the ‘future’ as it’s the DB for October (follow me? :S) in other words Liverpool have already splashed out on the likes of Torres or United on getting Tevez. But after one season without selling loads of players (difficult in FM) or getting market value for a top player like Carragher (impossible in FM) then you’ll most likely start the next season with next to nothing in the kitty, which seems a little odd to me, United always seem to be able to afford a 30mil player, they’ve only done it once this season, but last year was it? Hargreaves, Tevez etc etc.

I dunno how to word it, it’s all very confusing :(

  13. Will says:

    :L i think i understand

  14. Howden says:

i now cant wait to see how much money they give man city in fm2009?!?

  15. Shiloh says:

For the people who want to be involved in the running of the background of the club, why don’t you have that negotiated into your contract?

You can start off at a club with no say, and as you do well you have more of a say. You will have earnt it.

i.e. You are a mid-table club, and another mid-table club offer you a contract but to lure you they can offer or you can demand a say in the running of the background too. It would also improve contract negotiations between yourself and the board.

  16. the best says:

    si games listen up….lol
    1. wats the point in transfer valuations if u hav 2 pay over twice as much for the player?
    2. u should be able to shout constant instructions to your players during the game eg. for a player who constantly keeps wastin chances instead of gettin his head up for the killer pass…a player playin less than a satisfactory 7…or a fill back not pushin up enough in team attacks…or for a player 2 be careful followin a bookin in an important game…or maybe shout instructions to the whole back line to keep things tight if you r under alot of pressure…or how about if an oppostion player is playin poorly or has a niggle to attack him specifically?
i think the list is endless u get my point this is FOOTBALL MANAGER after all…jus put in as much detail durin games as u can and some more choices during team talks…
    3. be able to talk to your sqaud aprt from games i.e if your top of the league witha few games left explain 2 them with composure they can win or if your a lil off te pace rally your players to get a run going and challenge the leaders….or maybe take a swipe at the leaders saying you expect a slip up and see how they react..part 2 coming soon

  17. the best says:

    part 2..si games listen up
    4. some in depth feed back from your coaches and reserve team managers on who is ready for the 1st team or who should be sent on loan to better themselves…coz sometimes u forget about your 18s squad or reserve team if you are invloved in the title chase…and i think it will justify coaches attributes by obviously the better your coaches the more accurate he will be with a hot prospect actually makin it 2 the big stage. also sendin a player on loan you should be able to explain to him that a good loan spell could kickstart his career at the club wen he returns…or pull a young player aside explain if he keeps his head dwn in training and in matches he could be ready for the 1st team.
    5. maybe a too in depth opinion but maybe players could hav more say like in real life players give interviews…why not a player explaining his current form should bring him a england call or a squad rotaion players good performances gettin him a run in the side…or a captain in the relegation battle rallyin his players to pull theyre weight…
    6. as someone said the training could be better…working on a particular attribute is definate need especially for players who lack composure, control, strength, passing and shootin ability, and of course stamina and fitness etc….
    7. wen u take over at a new team u should be able to choose players squad status coz everyone has there own ideas but wen u do this on the current game payers happiness are affected….part 3 soon feedback ppl

  18. Will C says:

another thing that ‘grinds my gears’ is the fact that in reality managers do not always do all the transfers… what i liked about FM07 was the fact that the Board go out and buy players if you dont bring enough in… ie- i was West Ham and didnt have a good enough CB so my board bought Vincent Kompany for £14mill.
That was cool when it happened and it is like real life… such as the Shevchenko saga!

I would also LOVE to see transfers being more realistic…. you would never see teams paying £55million for a 20 year old in real life, thats just CRAZY is it not?

How much cash will Man City get, techically they should get infinite cash cos thats what their owners have said? realistic, but stupid!! would also like to see Quality Players being more likely to join smaller clubs… i mean Ronaldinho and Robinho both had an interest in joing City? in FM that would just not happen!!

Those who think Walcott is overrated in real life deserve to be shot! he is quick, sharp, good ball control and for someone his age is showing potential to be one of the best english players (not really saying much to be honest)…. yeah fair enough not an Henry but still on FM08 he plays for Scunthorpe…. ermmm REALLY?!?! thats just a bit of a piss take dont you think?

Another decent idea would be for SI to include different Skins, Team Logos, Kits, Facepacks and stuff so i dont have to trek the internet to find them!! lazy, yes… useful, yes!!

    Any concerns?

  20. the best says:

anybody know how to switch javascript on?

  21. Will C says:

    Hubba hubba… FM09 is going 3D!!

  22. Hotshot says:

3D match engine baby! I just hope that all future comments about this feature aren’t people whining that the gfx aren’t as good as Fifa, the first person to do that is going to get an almighty bitch slap!

I do agree with the ‘shouting’ instructions from the line, there are plenty of animated managers who scream from their technical box, eh Mr Pearce?! I think it would be a good introduction for ‘player instructions’ to be included, it could be a button you activate which splits the screen, half the match and half the tactics formation page. Click a player in the tactics screen and it opens up a list of possible commands like ‘push up’ ‘calm down’ ‘cross more’ ‘ fall back’ stuff like that.

This can also work for sections of the pitch, select the back 3rd and this will select all defenders who you can instruct to ‘tighten up’ or ‘mark your man’. Same for Strikers, ‘shoot on sight’ ‘stay in the box’.

i don’t agree with things like shouting ‘shoot’, if you’re watching in highlight mode then the AI has already selected whether it’ll be a goal or not, shouting shoot won’t make a difference. Plus there will be people who will always shout shoot, whatever.

    Bring on FM09!

Also anyone else signed up to FML? I’m in the Shearer gameworld!

  23. Hotshot says:

Also to further this point, if you’re always shouting instructions maybe you could get a reputation as an animated manager, who players always look to for guidance when the pressure is on, someone like the afformentioned Stuart Pearce. Otherwise you will get a Sven reputation where you sit there cross armed and let it play out. Then the players will look more to their captain.

    Any thoughts on this?

  24. Will C says:

Hands up if you have already pre-ordered the game!!?? haha, yeah man just ordered it! is it depressing that i have??

I love the motivation idea in the matches…. and the assistant assessment as to whether your tactics are working or not!!
    BRAVO SI!

  25. Niall says:

I’m taking credit for the motivation idea in matches, they have obviously read my first post :p

Nah all sounds cool so far, looking forward to it!

Good comments Hotshot, I’ll comment on them in a bit!

  26. Jonathan says:

You can play as a female manager!!??? What the f**k!!

  27. Jonathan says:

Although, love the 3D matche engine and the fact there is going to be pre and post match press conferences. He also mentioned journalists remember things you say so I assume they could come back to haunt you.

    But again, female managers…why?????

  28. Hotshot says:

Will if anyone claims that you’re sad for pre-ordering it, then i better not mention to them that i did so about 3 months ago when it first appeared on play….

    Female Managers:
Suddenly you’re gonna have to spend more of your clubs wealth on fitting female toilets in the dressing rooms, the tunnels will have floral carpets and every stadium window will have to have net curtains! :P

  29. Hotshot says:

Not to mention the amount of Potpourri required to affect the size of a stadium like the Nou Camp!

  30. Will says:

Walcotts not bad but overated and nice one Jonathan getting that link (Y) alot of our ideas are there but thats prob just coinsedence :L

hopefully SI saw most of our comments and we will find our ideas included in FM09, hope you all enjoy the game on Halloween as i cant get it until CHristmas because of exams (N) lol.

Its crazy how much FM09 has changed compared to 08, obviously thanks to us lol

  31. Will says:

Theres a comment way above, and what PLONKER wrote a comment criticising someones spelling? I mean get a life! This is not an English class you fagg, its shorter 2 spel fings rong u tw@

  32. Will C says:

ha ha, Hotshot you funny guy!! I am so excited about it coming out its not even amusing…..

ANOTHER QUALITY ADDITION = Press Conferences and stuff before and after games is awesome…. apparently answering questions can screw up your career… SWEET MAN!

Walcott HAS been overrated…. but now, he is sick!

  33. Hotshot says:

Press conferences will be awesome, but after a while, like the media stuff currently before and the game, it’ll get a bit repetitive, you find out the positive effect answers and stick to those. Hopefully they add in a truck loads of combinations for it.

How long before people start asking if you can type your own answers to the press generated questions. It just can’t be programmed people, let it go! I’m a programmer myself and i know what it’s take to include something like that, the amount of storage required. You don’t want to write a response, have an hour of loading time just for it to ask, please insert disc 3 of 47. :P

Also with female managers will the scouts report also have a section stating how good a players legs look in shorts? maybe based on the 7 star system. I assume so lol

  34. Hotshot says:

    @Will

Best of luck with your exams mate, FM depends on it!

  35. Jonathan says:

Like the additions, but still a little annoyed nothing seems to have been done about the managers wages considering it was a point the majority of people picked up on on this thread. They’re going to be pretty pointless again!

  36. Will says:

    Cheers mate :L
i dont care anymore bout spending wages cs Footie Manager has gone 3d…..OH YEAH!!

and it looks like a good 3d addition, cs in FIFA and all there is like only 3 different types of ways to strike the ball. hopefully there are loads of different ways in FM09 because it woud be annoying if lots of goals scored in the game were the exact same…if you understand me?…

  37. Hotshot says:

well as in the video he said further feature announcements to be made, lets hop[e at least a few more of our ideas sneak in there. It’ll probably only be minor tweaks though.

Maybe everyone of us should email this forum to SI every single day until our requests are included?

  38. Will says:

Yes! why not, jeez i cant waitr to play this

  39. Will says:

New look for this site (Y)

  40. Hotshot says:

Site looks good Niall, as a web designer and programmer myself, i can say very clean and shiney, i like :)

  41. Niall says:

Cheers buddy… It’s getting there although still not finished. Got some big plans for the site (new sponsors, competitions, new writers) so this is one is part of that process!

Any sign of you writing anything mate? People are loving your comments so you should get yourself up there in lights.

  42. Hotshot says:

Not at the moment mate, work is busy, and i’m off on holiday to Greece next week for a fortnight.

What would i write about? I didn’t exactly get blinding results for English back at school lol

  43. Rudeon says:

    My gawd!

I turn my back for a few weeks and voila the site is revamped, FM 09 is officially sorted, we get the recognisition we deserv etc etc etc and to those idiots who complain about language this isnt a linguistics course.

FM09 really looks good! i hope they listened to us! Niall u betta be on good terms with SI man :) so we can get a much more enjoyable version of FM *grin* maybe they can have a credits page entry named after us :)

I cant wait to get the game just hope its not buggy and then needs patching!

Well its on now gentlemen and i guess ladies too LOL as they now footy managers as well … muwahhahahahahahaha talk about equal rights hey :)

Let the good times roll peeps!!

  44. Niall says:

@Hotshot fair enough buddy just think you’d be good at it. Talk about tactics, training advice, players anything you want really but it’s up to you. I could do with a few weeks in Greece myself, this weather is depressing!

    @Rudeon
Welcome back buddy, we missed ya :p

Yep FM09 is sounding slick so far and I can’t wait to get my hands on it plus we’ll have lots of good new content on here for it!

    Cheers fellas

  49. Will says:
